SKF single row tapered roller bearings are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads. The projection lines of the raceways meet at a common point on the bearing axis to provide a true rolling action and therefore low frictional moments during operation. The axial load carrying capacity of tapered roller bearings increases with increasing contact angle α. The size of the contact angle, which is usually between 10° and 30°, is related to the calculation factor e (from the data table): the larger the value of e, the larger the contact angle.
In addition, this design allows rolling movement without the rollers slipping off the tracks of the outer and inner rings. The contact angle of the tapered roller bearings on the rolling tracks is variable, which in each case offsets the application axial and radial loading ratio; at a larger angle, a greater ability to withstand axial loads.
Tapered roller bearings feature tapered inner and outer ring raceways with tapered rollers arranged between them, angled so the surface of the rollers converge at the axis of the bearing. These bearings are unique in that, unlike most bearings that can handle either axial or radial loads, they can handle large amounts of load in both directions. This type of bearing is composed of an inner ring, outer ring, and tapered rolling elements.
A single row taper bearing is limited in that it can only take high axial loads from one direction, but if adjusted against a second tapered roller bearing, that axial load is counteracted. This allows the bearings to accept high radial and axial loads from multiple directions. It is because of this ability that pairs of tapered roller bearings are used in car and vehicle wheel bearings where they must handle large.
